Popularity of Gone With the Wind Essay -- Margaret Mitchell Literature
Popularity of Gone With the Wind Margaret Mitchell's romantic epic, Gone With the Wind, owes its remarkable popularity to the climate of sudden self-destruction and dreariness the Depression created. The Old South's grandeur, coupled with its Civil War-era decadence, provided much-needed escapism for readers, as well as paralleling the U.S.'s own plight in the 20s and 30s. In addition, Scarlett O'Hara's feminist role, her devotion to her land, and her indomitable optimism lent hope to those who had lost faith in the American Dream. A spirit of beautiful, colorful life at the onset sets up the South's inevitable destruction and magnifies the greatness of the land and its people. "Spring had come early that year, with warm quick rains and sudden frothing of pink peach blossoms and dogwood dappling with white stars the dark river swamp and far-off hills. Already the plowing was nearly finished, and the bloody glory of the sunset colored the fresh-cut furrows of red Georgia clay to even redder hues." (10) The foreshadowing of the "bloody glory" of sunset is striking, but idealism is the main theme presented here. Scarlett's status as a second-generation immigrant adds further to this atmosphere of opportunity. Her father, a proud Irishman, proclaims "'Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything, for Ã
âtis the only thing in this world that lasts...And to anyone with a drop of Irish blood in them the land they live on is like their mother.'" (39) The idea of an undersized foreigner claiming a larg e stake in America as his own must surely have fueled the imagination of the great influx of recent immigrants, many of whom used GWTW as a primer to American literature. Hanging over the tranquil South is the ... ...n which to plan her campaign," (1023) comforts her. Her final statement reiterates her sentiments for a new "tomorrow" after Atlanta's burning (414), and her faith in her own abilities again avers Mitchell's feminist leanings: "With the spirit of her people who would not know defeat...she raised her chin. She could get Rhett back...'Tomorrow, I'll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.'" (1024) With its broad appeal to uprising women, the hopeless, and anyone yearning for a long diversion into a more regal time, as well as its firm beliefs in the American Dream in a time when the premise was widely doubted, GWTW's rank as the most popular American book is undeniable; a more debatable question would be whether Mitchell's intentions were first of providing desolate America with romance, or rather of pushing veiled political propaganda.

Confession of a Former Drug Addict: Learning the Value of Family
Confession of a Former Drug Addict: Learning the Value of Family Misguided Youth ââ¬Å"Oh now that I think back about it, I was really stupid when I was young and that my mother is really unfortunate to have a son like me! â⬠Kong said as he ended with a short embarrassed laugh while he recounts the past he isnââ¬â¢t exactly proud of in mandarin. Kong, 36 , had spent most of his youth in and out of the drug rehabilitation centre and prison. His parents separated while he was still young and their mother decided to bring him and his younger brother along to move into their grandmotherââ¬â¢s place at Ang Mo Kio.Kong was the eldest among the grandchildren left in his grandmotherââ¬â¢s care. With his mother busy at work to support the family and his grandmother busy attending the younger kids, the mischievous boy always finds the chance to sneak out of the house. It was then when he got acquainted and started hanging out with the older kids around his neighborhood. These a re the friends that very much influenced and helped mold him into a teenage delinquent. ââ¬Å"I was encouraged by them to join their gang, to skip school and hang out with them. And it was then when I learn how to shoplift, cutting chain off bicycles to steal, extorting money from other kids and getting into fight for the most minor reason, just for the sake of getting into trouble and seeking thrill out of it. â⬠, Kong explained how he was a wayward boy that followed whatever his peers instigated. ââ¬Å"And it felt really good to be part of the gang and ââ¬Ëcoolââ¬â¢ to be doing things other normal ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ kids didn't dare to do. â⬠It was then when young Kongââ¬â¢s misbehaviors and actions, prove that it can have direct consequence on his family, and the first to experience it was none other than his younger brother. Both brothers were studying in the same neighborhood secondary school. Kongââ¬â¢s truancy and bad records kept piling up and finally one day, he even threatened to hurt the schoolââ¬â¢s principal while being called to discipline. Thatââ¬â¢s when the school decided enough is enough, and Kongââ¬â¢s expulsion was announced. But not just him alone, his younger brother was to be expelled along with him. Sure the younger brother wasnââ¬â¢t exactly the good obedient student, had been seen around Kong, caused some mischief and playful enough to skip school occasionally. But he never crossed the line or got involved with Kongââ¬â¢s unlawful activities. Still, the school found these reasons enough to get the siblings off their ground permanently. ââ¬Å"The principal felt that because heââ¬â¢s my younger brother, heââ¬â¢s nature is surely as bad as me! Just because heââ¬â¢s my younger brother. â⬠Kong said while shaking his head slightly. ââ¬Å"You may think thatââ¬â¢s unfair but things were different back then during that time. Now if something like this happened nowadays, you will see the principal and school getting onto news! â⬠Kong ended with a laugh. From Bad to WorseHis mother and grandmother blamed him for dragging his younger brother into that situation because of the troubles he brewed and being a bad influence. But this incident didnââ¬â¢t make Kong reflect on his actions. He didn't think of it as a big deal. He didnââ¬â¢t care about anything. The teenagerââ¬â¢s rebellious nature only served to take things for the worse. Soon after getting expelled from school, he soon finds himself experimenting with drugs. It was the norm as people around him were doing inhalants and drugs. The first he experimented was glue sniffing. Then he moved on to trying out ecstasy and heroin etc.Experimentation turns into dependency. The addiction works in an insidious way, it crept in and slowly took over Kongââ¬â¢s life before he realized. Days of drug taking ritual turned to weeks, then months and years. It seems like Kong wasnââ¬â¢t the one controlling th e drugs, it was the other way round. Spending his life in a drug-fuelled haze, it revolved around being troubled over where to find money to support his next supply of drugs. Keeping up with the addiction proof to be not cheap. Although he had joined and worked for the lion dance troupe that was associated with his gang, it wasnââ¬â¢t enough to keep up with his expenses. To satisfy with his drug cravings, he resorted to theft and robbery, even stealing from his family. The one he hurt most during this period was his mother. Seeing her cry because of him was nothing new. His desperation for drug even made him turned his hand on his very own mother. Kong recalls that particular incident that he will feel bad for as long as he lived, ââ¬Å"This one time I was having this great urge for drugs, but I didn't have money with me, I ransacked the house and approached my mother in the kitchen. But she wasnââ¬â¢t willing to hand me any money and was screaming at me to quit.I got impatien t and this sudden surge of anger rose up and I exploded,â⬠He slapped his own mother across the face. Kong then continued remorsefully, ââ¬Å"I was an unfilial and disgraceful son. Unfit to be human for hurting my mother like that. Like what they say, I deserved to be struck down by lightning. â⬠Relatives chided him as being ââ¬Ëuseless, and a shame to the family. ââ¬â¢ Kong ended up caught and admitted to the drug rehabilitation centre. After his release, Kong was still mixing around with the ââ¬Ëbadââ¬â¢ group of friends as he felt being shunned by the society and this was the group of people most accepting of him.He couldnââ¬â¢t stay clean and soon fell back to his old ways after gaining freedom. He was sent back to the drug rehabilitation centre once more for relapse. ââ¬Å"I was stubborn and self-centered. I didn't really try hard or be determined enough to change my life. I just thought I was unlucky to be caught the first few times. ââ¬â¢ Kong s ays. He continued his old ways, involving in gang fight and robbery with hurt. He was sentenced to imprisonment for a total of 7 years and given 10 strokes of cane. Turning PointWhen he was finally released from Changi Prison, Kong, 30 by that time, felt that he had already wasted a large part of his youth. He made sure to remind himself of the guilt and shame. The heart wrenching moment etched in his memories when he saw how his mother broke down in tears when he was sentenced, how his aged grandmother with declining health having to make her way to visit him in prison over the years. ââ¬Å"I robbed my mother for years because of my rebellious nature, because of my selfishness. All I did was lying and being dishonest with everything they confronted with me.I never thought about the damage I imposed on my family because of my actions. I took advantage on how they dote, only to make them heart-broken. â⬠Kong confessed. Now, he deeply understands for mistakes he made, he wonâ⠬â¢t be the only one paying his dues. His family and loved ones will inevitably bear his consequences one way or the other. Among the tattoos that he was inked over his body during his rebellious younger days, he is now sporting a ââ¬Ësak yantââ¬â¢ on his back, a traditional form of tattoo normally performed on followers by Buddhist monks in Thailand. He decided to embrace Buddhism and was on a religious trip to Thailand to receive a ââ¬Ësak yantââ¬â¢. But the tattoo wasnââ¬â¢t what he received. It was there where he got to know this local young woman from Chiang Mai, who soon became his wife. Kong and his wife now have two young daughters. Unfortunately, their first daughter Elina, 6, is diagnosed with minor autism and currently attending a special school. But their younger daughter has an even more unfortunate fate. Rita, now 3, was born with a severe spinal deformity which was curved at 80 to 90 degree in ââ¬ËSââ¬â¢ shape. She is the youngest and one of the m ost serious cases of congenital scoliosis in Singapore. Two titanium rods each 15 cm to 20 cm long was inserted into her body to straighten her spine and ribs when she was 2. Every six to nine months, Rita will have to go through operations until she is 14 years old, to expand the rods allowing growth. Being the sole breadwinner of the family, Kong currently works as a cargo assistant with a monthly salary of $1600. He tried to working overtime whenever possible so as to provide more support to his family. He was able to cover more about half of the medical expenses from his own Medisave and Medifunds for Ritaââ¬â¢s medical expenses. He shared how he learnt humility and helpfulness receiving help from relatives and donations arranged by the hospital. ââ¬Å"Sometimes I think that maybe itââ¬â¢s because of my past deeds, it might have been my karma that caused even my daughters to have to suffer. Being a father made me realized how much the heart hurts when parents see their chi ldren suffer, like how my mother used to feel.Even now, I havenââ¬â¢t revealed all Ritaââ¬â¢s condition to my Thai wife. Iââ¬â¢m worried she may not be able to take it. Sometimes she will cry while looking at the long deep surgery scars running on Ritaââ¬â¢s back. .â⬠Kong said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m really grateful for my family and relatives who knew of my past, but still accepted me, loved and cared for my daughters as their own too. â⬠Kong added. Even though life may not have turn up perfect, family is now the fuel and motivation for Kong to not turn back his old ways, to be a responsible father and son.

Comparison of Prometheus and the Serpent of Genesis
The story of Adam and Eve in Genesis, and Prometheus in Theogony have many similarities. In particular, the role of the serpent and role of Prometheus complement each other. The serpent and Prometheus are both portrayed as sly-talking tricksters that reveal immortal knowledge to the humans of earth, and they are both punished for their actions. In both stories, Prometheus and the serpent are conniving characters that rebel against the higher authority figure. In Genesis the serpent is introduced as, ââ¬Å"more crafty than any wild creature that the Lord God had madeâ⬠¦[the serpent] said to the women, ââ¬Ëis it true that God has forbidden you to eat any tree in the garden?ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ (Genesis, 3). The serpent later uses his craftiness to fool theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Prometheus also gives knowledge to mankind, but reveals it in a more direct way than the serpent. Prometheus steals fire from Zeus, then takes the fire to earth and bestows the knowledge on mankind (Nelson, 45). When Prometheus deceives Zeus and gives fire to mankind, he releases the wrath of Zeus upon mankind and himself. Zeus punishes Prometheus by binding him with ââ¬Å"inescapable harsh bondsâ⬠¦ he inflicted on him a long-winged eagle, which ate his immortal liver; but grew as much in all at night as the long-winged bird would eat all dayâ⬠(Nelson, 43, 521-525). Godââ¬â¢s punishment of the serpent does not seem as violent as Prometheusââ¬â¢s punishment, but they are both harsh. God also uses nature when punishing the serpent, like Zeus controlled the eagle. ââ¬Å"Then the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this you are accursed more than all cattle and all wild creatures. On your belly you shall crawl, and dust you shall eat all the days of your lifeâ⬠¦They [mankind] shall strike at your headââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Genesis, 3). The serpent and Prometheus are punished for eternity for rebelling against their authority. Throughout both stories, the roles that the serpent and Prometheus play parallel each other. They both are presented as crooked characters from the outset. Both reveal knowledge to humans that the corresponding authority figures did not want the humans to have. Forest Succession Stages and Maturity
Successional changes in plant communities were recognized and described well before the 20th century. Frederick E. Clements observations were developed into theory while he created the original vocabulary and published the first scientific explanation for the process of succession in his book, Plant Succession: An Analysis of the Development of Vegetation. It is very interesting to note that sixty years earlier, Henry David Thoreau described forest succession for the first time in his book, The Succession of Forest Trees. Plant Succession Trees play a major role in creating terrestrial plant cover when conditions develop to the point where some bare-ground and soil is present. Trees grow alongside grasses, herbs, ferns, and shrubs and compete with these species for future plant community replacement and their own survival as a species. The process of that race toward a stable, mature, climax plant community is called succession which follows a successional pathway and each major step reached along the way is called a new seral stage. Primary succession typically occurs very slowly when site conditions are unfriendly to most plants but where a few unique plant species can catch, hold, and thrive. Trees are not often present under these initial harsh conditions. Plants and animals resilient enough to first colonize such sites are the base community that kick starts the complex development of soil and refines the local climate. Site examples of this would be rocks and cliffs, dunes, glacial till, and volcanic ash. Both primary and secondary sites in initial succession are characterized by full exposure to the sun, violent fluctuations in temperatures, and rapid changes in moisture conditions. Only the hardiest of organisms can adapt at first. Secondary succession tends to happen most often on abandoned fields, dirt, and gravel fills, roadside cuts, and after poor logging practices where disturbance has occurred. It can also start very rapidly where the existing community is completely destroyed by fire, flood, wind, or destructive pests. Clements defines the succession mechanism as a process involving several phases when on completion is called a sere. These phases are: 1.) Development of a bare site called Nudism; 2.) Introduction of living regenerative plant material called Migration; 3.) Establishment of vegetative growth called Ecesis; 4.) Plant competition for space, light, and nutrients called Competition; 5.) Plant community changes that affect the habitat called Reaction; 6.) Final development of a climax community called Stabilization. Forest Succession in More Detail Forest succession is considered a secondary succession in most field biology and forest ecology texts but also has its own particular vocabulary. The forest process follows a timeline of tree species replacement and in this order: from pioneer seedlings and saplings to transition forest to young growth forest to mature forest to old growth forest. Foresters generally manage stands of trees that are developing as part of a secondary succession. The most important tree species in terms of economic value are a part of one of several serial stages below the climax. It is, therefore, important that a forester manage his forest by controlling the tendency of that community to move toward a climax species forest. As presented in the forestry text, Principles of Silviculture, Second Edition, foresters use silvicultural practices to maintain the stands in the seral stage that meets societys objectives most closely.

The Constitution And The Law - 877 Words
Our Constitution is over two centuries old and since the birth of it as early as 1803 the Supreme Court defined its role and power in the case, Marbury v. Madison, 1803, establishing the authority to define what the law is. Thus, if the law is confusing, it is up to the courts to interpret the law through the process of judicial review. There is much controversy as to whether or not judges are following the laws as written or imposing their personal preferences and rewriting law to suit themselves. Ackerman believes ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s a good thing that formal amendment is so hard; otherwise, the Constitution would become a mess, full of details signifying little,â⬠(Ackerman, 2007 p. 1743). There are opposing viewpoints as to the approach and evolving perspectives in the decisions made by our judges. I will analysis the opposing proponents, originalists and Living Constitutionalists, viewpoints in their interpretation of the Constitution and present their arguments in relation t o their perspective on the Constitution. In addition, I will apply their interpretational philosophies in the case Griswold v. Connecticut and ascertain the impact of their philosophies to the outcome of the case. The originalists, one of the two opposing proponents, believe in the theory of interpretation, that views the Constitution s provisions mean what the framers and the citizens understood then to mean, (Strauss, 2010). SPARTACUS Project Free Essays
Please be advised that you have been selected to join the SPARTACUS Project beginning June 1, 2011. This project requires complete confidentiality due to the sensitivity of its workers. The current company has selected to outsource our company to manage their labor functions. We will write a custom essay sample on SPARTACUS Project or any similar topic only for you Order Now There are 300 skilled labor workers currently employed. We would like to keep all 300 on board, have them join our company, and continue doing their current job roles. Our team will be evaluating the current process and work instructions on the floor to understand the job functions, to ensure the LEAN process and identify any opportunities for improvement. During this evaluation we will be communicating with the workers. Since they are not aware of the change in management, it is our goal to make them feel at ease with our presence, answer any questions as honestly as possible, try to eliminate any uncertainty that they may have, and establish somewhat of a relationship with them. We will have 30 days of evaluation prior to taking over the complete process. On the 25th day the company will announce the outsourcing of management of their labor and advise the workers the option to join our company with the same pay, benefits and seniority. If they do not choose to remain they will be offered a severance package based on the length of time with the company. Again our goal is to retain as many of the skilled workers as possible. This company has a very low attrition rate and workers are loyal with 5, 10, and 15 years of service. On this project you will experience different attitudes, emotions, and personalities, you are to establish a relationship with the worker and motivate them not only to stay on board but to energize them with change. This is a difficult task; however keep in mind our reading in Chapter 6 of the Organizational Behavior textbook regarding Abraham Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs. These needs are: 1. Physiological: Includes hunger, thirst, shelter, sex, and other bodily needs 2. Safety: Includes security and protection from physical and emotional harm 3. Social: Includes affection, belongingness, acceptance, and friendship 4. Esteem: Includes internal esteem factors such as self-respect, autonomy, and achievement; and xternal esteem factors such as status, recognition, and attention 5. Self-actualization: The drive to become what one is capable of becoming; includes growth, achieving oneââ¬â¢s potential, and self-fulfillment As a team we need to recognize that these skilled workers have these needs and as the new company we need to cater to them. When you are out on the floor inquire what the worker would like to see change. Many workers are waiting on an opportunity to be heard and have never received a chance to voice it until now. Also praise the loyalty, dedication, and morale that you see on the floor, let them tell you about their time here with the company and their families, what they have accomplished and achieved both personally and career wise. Take notes of what they said, acknowledge them by name, and ask them how they are doing when you see them. We have 25 days to fulfilling these needs. In those 30 days we know that we will not retain everyone. Workers may leave as it is an opportunity to change careers, a chance for early retirement, leave the job force, or for many other reasons. You have been chosen to be part of this team as your personality, motivation, and leadership play a large part in this project; to retain as many skilled workers as possible. Your personality characteristics contain or scored high positively in the Big Five factors mentioned in Chapter 4 of the Organizational Behavior textbook. The Big Five factors are: 1. Extraversion: This dimension captures oneââ¬â¢s comfort level with relationships. Extraverts tend to be gregarious, assertive, and sociable. Introverts tend to be reserved, timid, and quiet. 2. Agreeableness: This dimension refers to an individualââ¬â¢s propensity to defer to others. Highly agreeable people are cooperative, warm, and trusting. People who score low on agreeableness are cold, disagreeable, and antagonistic. 3. Conscientiousness: This dimension is a measure of reliability. A highly conscientious person is responsible, organized, dependable, and persistent. Those who score low on this dimension are easily distracted, disorganized, and unreliable. 4. Emotional stability (often labeled by its converse, neuroticism): This dimension taps a personââ¬â¢s ability to withstand stress. People with positive emotional stability tend to be calm, self-confident, and secure. Those with high negative scores tend to be nervous, anxious, depressed, and insecure. 5. Openness to experience: The final dimension addresses oneââ¬â¢s range of interests and fascination with novelty. Extremely open people are creative, curious, and artistically sensitive. Those at the other end of the openness category are conventional and find comfort in the familiar. Think of yourself as Spartacus leading himself and others from gladiator slavery with mere kitchen tools. History books state that Spartacus was able to influence 200 slaves to fight, only 80 of them got away in the first fight. You are utilizing the skills that you have learned to influence and motivate the skilled workers of this company to stay on board and let us manage them. You will face both acceptance and resistance. Resistance will come from workers who do not adapt to change well, and those that feel insecurity. Focus on them, take that challenge that you can influence them to accept, grow, and prosper with the change. Please feel free to discuss any questions, concerns, or ideas that you may with me at any time. My door is always open and your insight is always valuable. Remember you are an important asset in making this project a success. Reference Robbins, S. P. Judge, T. A. (2007). Organizational behavior (12th ed.). Claudios vocals are not what make this band shine, though, it is the lyrics he writes. All the lyrics are based on a science-fiction novel Claudio is writing, but the topics can also be seen in societys problems. If the lyrics dont hit you straight in the heart, then maybe the guitar work will. We will write a custom essay sample on Coheed and Cambria ââ¬Å"In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3â⬠or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Mixed with slow transitions, fast-paced solos, and grinding power chords, it will most likely make you play air guitar as you listen. Each song is a progression through Claudios story. The opening, ââ¬Å"The Ring in Return,â⬠is a solid instrumental that would work well in a fantasy movie. The title track is a powerful introduction to what Coheed and Cambria is all about. The album is full of many of the same vocals with the guitars switched up a bit throughout. The fast-paced ââ¬Å"Favor House Atlanticâ⬠is surely the song that you will learn by heart. Coheed and Cambria shows its softer side on the last track, ââ¬Å"The Light The Glass.â⬠This eight-minute song brings you through a roller coaster of fast and slow tempos. In the end, this turns out to be a great classic punk rock album, filled with lyrics of a story yet to be finished, and guitars that are filled with more creativity than most modern rock bands. Coheed and Cambria is not yet done, it has more albums to share with us in the future, and hopefully with the same drive as this one.
